Space Exploration and 3D Printing Just Seem to Go Together

An actual Apollo rocket that was built, but not launched from the Space Center in Florida. Another shameless way to plug a great vacation day.
This entry is a follow-up to our previous entry about 3D printing in space. There has been a flood of recent news in the sector from 3D Systems joining Planetary Resources space mining efforts, to NASA printing food in space, to Made In Space passing key milestones to putting a 3D printer in the International Space Station, to Paypal Galactic giving everyone a way to pay for 3D printing in space. Space travel is often one of the early adopters of new technology, so this synergy makes sense. No doubt more news is to come, especially next year when a 3D printer hopefully arrives at the International Space Station!
Does 3D Printing Have the Wright Stuff?
I was struck by a comment that I heard this week about the need for grand vision with new technology. The analogy was made between the Wright Flyer and today’s modern jets. 100+ years ago if you would have told people that the flimsy plane that struggled to carry one man a few hundred feet would someday be transformed into something to carry hundreds halfway across the world they would have called you a dreamer. Sometimes I read an article about a whole plane being printed or printed human organs and my knee jerk is, “there’s no way that’s practical and/or possible anytime soon”, but maybe I just am lacking a bit of audacious vision. Like to Solve Engineering Problems? Try Innocentive and Earn $!
So we’ll file this one under something I thought readers of a 3D printing blog would find interesting. Many years ago at a trade show in Las Vegas I stumbled upon a both for a company called Innocentive. Their concept was simple, but it blew me away. Companies (or sometimes individuals) would post real world science challenges and offer rewards to the individuals who could help solve them. Continue reading

Live Long and Print in 3D
Are you a fan of the Star Trek series? Thought this post was especially appropriate with the release of a new movie. Now this isn’t the place to argue if the classic, next generation or reboot is the best, although we welcome your comments. Instead we thought it was very cool that you could be made into your own action figure! Continue reading
3D Printing to Touch your Heart…or a 3D Replica
I was reading a great article called “Materialise HeartPrint 3D Printing Service” about how medical scans are being used to make 3D models and then 3D prints of a patient’s heart. I remember my orthodontist making a model of my teeth, but this is totally different. Continue reading
Do You Need Gravity for 3D Printing?
Source: Hubblesite.org
Can you 3D print in space? Would powder just float away? Would molten filament cooperate? These are all important questions to ask as 3D printing could have unique value for space travel. Continue reading
